Song Hye-kyo was spotted at the U.S. premiere of Wong Kar-wai’s movie, “My Blueberry Nights” on April 2nd, 2008.
Seeing Ms Song in New York raises a few questions:
(1) What is she doing in NYC at a movie premiere that she has no association to?
(2) Does posing with the Wong Kar-wai mean that he will give her a role in his next movie, “The lady from Shanghai”? Is she trying to follow in the footsteps of Rain, Se7en, Jang Dong-gun and the other fools actors/singers trying to break into the U.S. market?
(3) What happened to her? She barely looks the same. What happened to the glam Song Hye-kyo?
“My blueberry nights” stars Norah Jones, Jude Law and Natalie Portman. The film will open in limited release in the U.S. and has already passed out of major theaters in Korea.
This is Wong Kar-wai’s first English film. Other non-English films include, “In the mood for love” (2000) and “Happy Together” (1997)

First i just wanna say that the movie looks EXTREMELY MEDIOCRE.. and an average production at BEST… Second, i understand how some of you guys say, “why is Popseoul bashing korean celebs trying to make it in the states?” The truth is, and im with Popseoul on this one.. The current Korean celebs in the states who are trying to break the US market such as Rain, Se7en and maybe SHK are all qualified candidates to a certain degree but they still lack the appeal that american audience require.. But if i had to place my bet i would go with Rain, he has the best shot at making it big in the states, (especially with his new ninja movie)

I agree. I mean no offense but Koreans tout the beauty of their celebs way too much. Beautiful to one country is just plain pretty or hell, even plain to another. We have enough beautiful ppl here in the States. Can Ms. Song act is the question?
One has to be realistic. In a country whose history and present is plagued with ignorance and racism, what makes you think Song or Rain or any other entertainer trying to break into the American industry is special? Other countries might listen to American music or watch American films but we don’t here because Americans don’t feel we need to.
The point I’m trying to make is that here in the States, once the industry has its token Asian, they don’t need more. They’ve got Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang and as painful as it sounds, they consider them interchangeable. Oh you need an Asian woman, pick one? You want a man? Ken Watanabe, Jackie Chan and most recently, Daniel Dae Kim. It’s terrible but it’s obvious.
Even with the fashion industry, which I know way more about, agencies find it hard to sign an Asian model because they already have one. Right now the biggest Asian models are Hype Park and Du Juan (of China I believe). Most recently, Ford signed Hyoni, winner of their modeling competition and she shared a Vogue Korea cover with Hye Park. The designers themselves see no need to book more ethnic models. They already have one representing.
If Korean entertainers want to break into the American scene they need to learn some English or they will be type casted as the token Asian in a fighting role who makes more noises than words. Or they will play the contrived Western epitomization of the “Oriental mystique” Hollywood has been marketing for years. Secondly, entertainers need to ask themselves what they will be offering to American audiences or directors that they haven’t seen before. In the American pompous state of mind, we already have our own actresses and actors and singers. Why do we need you too? More specifically, can you make us the type of money we are used to making. How is splashing your face on the American television beneficial to us?
I am sorry to say this,but I never noticed any

I personally enjoy Korean films. I find it hard to watch them though because sometimes, there aren’t subtitles and I drag my best friend to watch with me so she can translate. If I can get some of my fave Korean actors on my screen in American films, I would be happy. And if I knew how to interest Hollywood directors, I would tell Ms. Song.
The most I can do is watch my foreign films with my bestie while I wait for the American industry to realize that they need them.
Meanwhile, I don’t plan on waiting forever (look how long it took an African American to get an Oscar) so I am currently learning Korean and eating Dol-sot bibimpap (my fave dish).

Oluchi are you serious like all stars they eventually burn out and will be replaced just like the stars you mentioned above. No offense, but YEH isn’t exactly renowned for her acting ability either. Sure, she’s had a couple of hit series under her belt but don’t forget her debut movie appearance was a disaster & quite honestly, there were plenty of scenes in Coffee Prince & Goong where the acting really made me cringe.
BUT– this is not to say that I am a blind SHK fangirl. I like her, & I think she is one of the most gorgeous people on this planet despite what these unflattering photos might suggest (I’m guessing the hair stylist didn’t make the plane.)

@jicks YEH is renowned for her acting ability, but for her looks. She’s just a newbie in acting but she had already won 2 Best New Actress Awards and 2 Best Actress Awards. She is also nominated for this year’s Baeksang Awards. So I’d say she has earned some bragging rights. And at least she didn’t get ahead because of her looks.
As for her debut movie, that was her very first movie and it’s not as if Song Hye Gyo’s 2 movies were big hits either.
No offense, but without Song Hye Gyo’s looks, she’d be a nobody in the acting business.

everyone on here needs to take a chill pill. First of all, nobody is saying that Song Hye Kyo is the MOST gorgeous woman on earth. That would not be true. Therefore, there is really no need for all the harsh comments about her look because the standard should not have been set to the highest in the first place. With that said, I actually think SHK is quite beautiful…in her own right. And when you think about it, even if only 1% of the world population (6,602,224,175) is blessed with the beauty gene, this would actually mean that around 66 million people on this planet are either extraordinarily handsome or incredibly gorgeous.
I applaud SHK for not wearing that much makeup. if wearing makeup is against the law, i wonder how many people would go into hiding because years of mascara, foundation, and other beauty products have made them fearful of their own original faces.
I personally think you are all too harsh on SHK. At the very least, she is a NATURAL beauty. not like the handful of Korean stars who resort to plastic surgery in order to live a dream of lies.

I don’t have a problem with her breaking into the U.S. market with an indie film. An indie film is a far better way to cut your teeth on acting in a foreign market than a big budget thing. I’m actually looking forward to seeing her in this movie. For one, I like small-budget movies. They tend to be a better quality and the actors are more emsemble rather than one or two big stars. Because the casts tend to be smaller in a smaller film the director can take more time with his actors, for this reason indie movies often have really good performances. Small films also leave room for more individual performances so everyone in the emsemble can shine rather than just a couple of big stars getting all the notice.
I also think she’s a very beautiful girl.
As for these photos…yeah, something is off here. It’s not that she’s un-glam. I don’t care about that. Natural is nice. But with these photos it’s something else…she just doesn’t LOOK like herself, period. She also seems a bit thinner than usual here. She’s petite anyway but she’s looking super thin. Too thin.

Sweet, Wong Kar Wai new film, my interest is perked. Looks like a good cast and Wong Kar Wai films don’t usually appeal to the masses but they are often critically acclaimed.
The preview didn’t reveal much so can’t judge a movie by a 1 min trailer, I hope it’s good. Jude Law is a plus for me and I didn’t know Norah Jones acts…. she looks pretty in the film.

Dumpling is spot on. SHG is doing an indie film made by a young Korean American director. I don’t think she has particularly strong intentions right now to cross over into Hollywood. Her fanbase is more in China/HK/Taiwan, and she’s been trying to cross over there.
Receptions for the new Wong Kar Wai film hasn’t been good, but most of his films generate mixed receptions anyway. And this road trip movie is not considered a “major” project in the vein of his next one with Nicole Kidman, the Lady of Shanghai.

YEH is renowned for her acting??? If you’re gonna compare awards, then SHK has won similar/just as many for her earlier drama series. But these awards that the girls have won are largely influenced by the popularity of the show– generally speaking, the TV network will award artists from the higher rated/more popular shows. The Baeksang Awards likewise are based heavily on the popularity factor.
And it’s not like YEH’s figure hasn’t helped her out along the way. I’m NEITHER a SHK or a YEH fangirl but I can be objective. Both girls have something physically going on for them but they both also have alot to work on w/ their acting.
I think SHK’s def the kinda star where most either love her or hate her. I fall somewhere in btwn.

@jicks yes she’s totally earned it. Unlike SHG, YEH never won the Popularity Award in ANY of the Awards shows. The ACTING awards that she has WON were for categories with no netizens voting. The only category with netizens voting that she ever won was for The Best Couple Awards.
The Grime Awards which she won the Best Actress Award in 2006, was an award judged ONLY by critics and directors. She won that year along with Song Il Kook as the Best Actor. And you know what, it wasn’t even for her highly rated drama. It was for her low rated and low budge drama The Man In The Vineyard, so even the critics and directors acknowledge her acting talent.
At the Baeksang Awards, YEH is not even winning in the Popularity category. And she is nominated for The Best Leading Actress yet once again.
I dont know exactly what you’re getting at with YEH’s figure, with her figure do you mean her body? Cause YEH used to be teased as fattie. So I dont exactly see how that helped her. She also wasn’t popular at the start of her acting career. As you may already have heard, netizens signed petitions to not cast her for Princess Hours. So she had to work HARDER afor her success compared to SHG, whom people accepted with open arms because they are blinded by her looks.

Now moving on to the issue about “bashing” other people’s idols. If you actually read what i wrote about Lee Junki, you should realize that I, as a commentator, was merely offering MY opinion of him.I could care less if other people didn’t like what i had to say about him. But it’s a whole different issue when someone like Taeujes started to threaten me with death threats because he got offended by my comment.
For this post of SHK, I am offering my view on SHK by giving reasons as to why I believe people are being too harsh on her. Did I say, “HEY EVERYONE, PLEASE STOP BASHING SHK OR ELSE I AM GOING TO DO TERRIBLE THINGS TO YOU!”

I think you haven’t read what I’ve written properly. To me, you sound like a YEH fangirl & quite honestly, that doesn’t make you any different to the SHK fans out there.
For one, not to undermine anybody’s achievements, but in terms of being critically acclaimed, Baeksang Awards overall aren’t necessarily viewed as “fair” as others, say in comparison to the Pusan Film Critics Awards. AND I never said YEH had only ever just won Popularity Awards, I was saying both SHK & YEH have won v. similar types of awards for similar successes w/ their respective hit TV series. I also never said YEH was not as worthy as SHK as an actress. Please read! I’ll reiterate- BOTH girls have room for improvement w/ their acting.
When you said that YEH is RENOWNED for her acting, either you don’t know how to use the word “renowned” or it’s your blind YEH worshipping obsession doing the talking. YEH has shown us she can fair well in comedy but I am still yet to see an impression made in a dramatic role. I think you would have to agree w/ that. If we were to speak of the same generation, I would feel much more comfortable if you labelled someone like Im Soo Jung or Gong Hyo Jin or even Ha Ji Won as being “renowned for their acting”- at least they have shown more versatility.
As far as the netizens poll/s you mentioned, I don’t really give a damn about them.!! Am I supposed to take a poll seriously where it’s possible for 12yr girls can vote multiple times a day???
Looks can only get you so far, & sure, SHK’s looks have gotten her some places but she is also known to carry an extremely professional & serious attitude towards the people she meets in the industry. Again, I’m not idolising at the feet of SHK, I’m just stating the facts as I see them w/o bias.
My final verdict: Cyberspace is a crazy world of SHK Fans VS YEH Fans VS KTH Fans. Can’t we all just be nice to each other..!

i never got the hype about song hye gyo. i think she is overrated like jun ji hyeon. they are both ok actresses, not amazing. shg is just a cute korean girl, not a beauty queen as her fans keep saying she is. even in photoshopped pics of her with extreme make-up on, she looks cute, not gorgeous. her features are too delicate to be gorgeous or sexy. but yes, she is cute.
the only celeb (in the west and in the east) who looks equally beautiful and charismatic with no make-up on is kim hee sun. that woman is soo goregeous. after all, she is nicknamed “the first beauty of s. korea”.

I have to say that SHK doesn’t look too great here. The whole ensemble is really unflattering. Perhaps she wanted not to stand out or be noticed? Generally I do think she’s a pretty girl, but this was not one of her best beauty moments.
