Won Bin: Are women really this clean…?

What the…..? What is the guy implying?

Actor Won Bin‘s latest endorsement for Cuckoo Rice Cookers shows the actor walking through a minimalistic modern room to a rice cooker on a countertop. He reveals a new feature of the cooker – namely a removable lid.  That’s fine and dandy. However, what he says at the end just irked me: “Are women this clean?” What the hell is this supposed to mean – that they were dirty in general? Call me sensitive but this one is an epic fail for the CF producers.

  1. okay says:

Yeah, they should have thought about that. ;)

  2. LOL says:

I really didn’t see it that way actually. the way he says it kinda makes the question into a rhetorical question.
Because maybe its just me..but the word clean used here in korean has a very different tone of voice than what readers might assume from your post.
Yeah so for me the way he says the word sounds more like a compliment than an insult. and if i were to translate what he said..it would be more like
“are all women clean like this?” in a positive rhetorical question. stating yeah they obviously have perfect looking houses with the ideal rice cooker. (wonbin is like in awe with the rice cooker in the cf LOL)
and would make the women viewers be like “of course wonbin” and will make them go buy a rice cooker xD

  3. fanken says:

If I’m not mistaken, 2ne1′s Dara likes Won Bin :)

  4. SuperJuniorLover6666666666 says:

I saw this CF on TV a while ago..

  5. strawberryfieldsforever says:

no biggie.. it’s like he has finally confirmed something he knew “women are this clean”

  6. oh he’s doing tv commercial.. wow the place was soo cleaner than MIne LOLZ! it would be nice if I have rice cooker for christmas :)

  7. comet says:

Don’t blame him. He’s merely reading from the script. But I think it’s a fact that Korean folks, especially women folk are really clean. And obviously, they also houseproud and take care of their homes. If only I could be like them …..

  8. QUINCY says:

I don’t know the exact meaning of his sentence because I don’t understand korean, but I don’t think the CF could have implied something THAT insulting :|

  9. bliss says:

its not at all demeaning; he’s complimenting women stating that they are clean. no need to get sensitive about it. and its just a rice cooker commerical – i dont think theyre trying to put in any more meaning than there is already

  10. LadyIgraine says:

won bin is not doubt, handsome. but recently, something bothered me a bit about him…he’s known in the industry for being a reclusive, shy, actor. i wonder if he is secretly in the closet?

  11. kaixinguo says:

I think we’re all missing an important point: What does cleanliness have to do with rice-cookers??? To me, it seems totally irrelevant to the product at hand.

I can’t translate all that stuff about this magical lid (oooh! It’s removable! And….?), so I don’t know what is so awesome about rice that has him in awe of the woman’s cleanliness. Please let me know if I’m wrong, though…

Secondly: if I were a dude and I came home hungry to find my lady gone and just a pot of rice on the kitchen counter, I don’t think her cleaning skills would be the thing I would mention first… He obviously came home (or visited) to get some action (hence the flowers)…

    • Winter says:

I don’t understand a word from CF, but judging from what I’ve watched he seems to be thinking about dating/ marrying this rice cooker. Don’t be suprised:
It’s always there for him when she’s gone.
      It cooks rice.
And it appears to be cleaner than most ladies he have met before.

Just look at his expression, when he stands next to rice cooker. They’re in love.

  12. MMM says:

At the end the verb used is 깔끔, which in the context said in the CF more closely translates to tidy or methodical, rather than clean.

I took it to mean more like, “Are women truly this particular about how their kitchen-wares are cleaned?”

To me as a Korean speaker, it didn’t sound too offensive. Maybe a bit odd, yes, but just look at Won Bin’s Face :)

  13. umm.. says:

it’s supposed to be funny. in open houses in girls’ dorms, guys would jump around and be in awe and be like, “wow! it smells so good in here!” i think this cf is trying to get that same reaction so no need to be offended.:) it’s just like the guy world and the girl world and how each responds to interesting stuff about each other

  14. superfine says:

ok yes, the question is, “are women really this clean?” but it’s not in a mean way. he means are we really that clean, like are we generally this clean. cause guys are known to be messy and whatnot, he’s wondering if girls are generally that clean. so it’s not a bad thing. you should brush up on your korean.

  15. He certainly doesn’t appear to be malicious (just from his facial expression); then again, what do I know? I don’t speak Korean :)

  16. Have read Men are from Mars etc, but the differences between the sexes still elude me. I really think we are 2 different species!Perhaps this site would be of use to your visitors…? Thanks.

  17. Blume says:

It is not possible to generalize, mainly if, but always it is depending on the person, as well as not all the men are careless. The clearest example is Won Bin

  18. www says:

This is not questioning a woman’s cleanness as in sexual terms, but he is just asking a rhetorical question,is a woman is “tidy”, as in clean room, clean clothings and stuff opposed to being messy. The word “clean” has a different nuance in Korean language. Just that the translation is weird.
