Dong-bang-shin-ki’s fans violate American tv host

nate_081204_10
Okay not completely violated but still close enough…

On the most recent episode of Fuse program, “Fuse Excellent Adventure”, Nate Jackson, the host, went on an adventure to Seoul’s 2008 Asia Song Festival and only covered SM artists such as DBSK, Shinee, and Girls Generation.

According to his blog, he talks about how crazy female underaged fans who are hardcore fans of groups such as DBSK, began touching him when they found out he hung out with them.

Not only did he interact with fans but he got to experience “k-pop culture” from the best seat in the house, the seat offered to him by none other than the godfather himself, Lee Soo Man.

Throughout this episode he spends time with crazy fan girls and some personal time with Shinee and DBSK from whom he learns many moves including “Da Sexy Chin” and the “Scrambled Legs”.

Check out the episode and photos from his “adventure” below.

Koreans have got to learn something from this man. His pronunciation while singing “Mirotic” was pretty good.

  2. xmissy says:

    @…

excuse my ignorance xD but i still dont think SM paid them off. Theres really no way to prove whether he did or didnt so I will just drop the topic.

  3. Elle says:

Its really cool that he’s totally into the music even though this might be his first time experiencing it. And while the whole audience was doing the same moves in sync(they always do that in Asia a lot, no?) he was dancing by himself lol

And yes Fuse is a well known channel in America. Ever since MTV stopped playing music that’s the channel people watch

  4. lev says:

Awesome coverage. I’m glad Korean pop is getting more recognition.
Damn man, I want to experience a concert someday. =\

@disgusted’s first comment: That’s like saying why let American products come overseas. To get more exposure and success. So stfu.

  5. anne says:

    hey that was pretty cool!
    thanks!
    nate is pretty cool too
    DBSK!!!
    lol

Elle, do you even live in America? What are you talking about? Barely anyone watches Fuse TV, its website is more popular than its channel. People go online for most of their music or watch either MTV 2, or other MTV variations (MTV Hits, Jams, etc.), CMT, BET, BET J, Music Choice or VH1 for music, all of which can be found on cable and satellite networks. MTV is popular among teens and tweens, you know, the group that DBSK appeals to, who listens to and buys all their stuff. Fuse is not that well known and easily lost in a sea of channels. They seldom play good shows – most of which are reruns – and none of their original stuff is remotely interesting. MTV never stopped playing music, they have so many different music networks available that they don’t have to play it on just one station and all of them are available on basic cable/satellite packages (Just check Comcast and Direct TV’s website). Fuse is not that popular. DBSK isn’t mentioned anywhere on their main website.

I find it funny that this is good exposure, when all they showed was that DBSK is an Asian-imitation of the Backstreet Boys and all the only people who like them are overly obsessed Korean girls who look alike. Its just setting them up for a stereotype.

Trust me if DBSK could make it on Chile TV, in some random Mexican Magazine, get on the news in Spain, and the Cassiopeia fan club be acknowledged due to their size then Americans (besides Nate) would have already taken notice and expressed interest(whether it be TIME Magazine – whose already covered Ayumi Hamasaki – CNN, or other international stations). I mean Rain got a Colbert, which is waaaaaay more popular than Fuse and Se7en made it on Bet J, which is well-watched in the black community, but yet no one seems to care.

Really, who else besides those of us who like kpop are blogging about this or remotely exited. Like Rain’s Colbert appearance, BoA’s debut, and Se7en’s appearance on Bet J, DBSK’s adventure on Fuse will fall on death ears.

Look at Jpop. Anime is highly popular, and more people would rather wear kimonos and learn Kanji than wear hanboks and learn Hangul, but yet Jpop has yet to make a huge impact – even if a lot more exposure – Puffy Amy Yumi (who had their own TV show), Anime (whose op and eds are sung by Jpop artists), Anime conventions (who usually invite popular Jpop artists to preform), and even AZN TV and Anime network who regularly plays Bento Beatbox or music videos from Jpop artists. Its not a lack of exposure, its a lack of interest.

Kpop should just focus on the places where there’s a higher rate of success, like Latin America and European countries whose apparently taken interest. Leave America to itself.

Ella, the only place Fuse is available is direct tv or dish and its only for like rock music.sometimes they show other types of genre but is its mostly focused on rock. i dont think you even have fusetv or even ever watched it. your being delusional,no one almost ever watches fuse tv and just like Dez said, they compared them to the backstreet boys who died a long time ago along with other boybands.

  8. […] if the last incident weren’t enough, fans trampled three girls during the taping of KBS‘ Music Bank which […]

  9. Daph says:

I still think this is good exposure for DBSK.

  10. Michelle says:

On the contrary, Fuse has a lot of things to offer. I have a Dish and a DVR, and I sometimes watch/record fuse tv programs. They have 30 min. artist segments where they show the artist’s music videos and they have specials pertaining to all types of music including rap, r&b, rock, alternative, metal, etc. About the only thing I haven’t heard on fuse is country music. Fuse is basically a more alternative version of MTV/VH1 without all the celebrity crap. I hate MTV/VH1, there is almost nothing good to watch there anymore. When I watch music television, I like to watch for the music, not to find out who is sleeping with whom, petty gossip, and all that other crap that is becoming more prevalent on the MTV and VH1 channels. Btw, I taped this segment, and it does have its funny moments.

  11. Dez says:

Michelled, there’s three problems with your post:

A.) You’re in the minority and even you only watch it sometimes.

B.) Fuse does not hit DBSK’s target audience like MTV, VH1, and BET, as a matter of fact, Fuse does not appeal to them at all.

C.) All that crap you mentioned is in demand and what most people want, so the fact that Fuse doesn’t have it means on or two things: 1. Its not popular, so it doesn’t have to show it and 2. People don’t watch it because it doesn’t show what’s popular.

Really, even if they did get exposed, they’ll be seen as an Asian imitation, rather than real artists. Had I not known about DBSK and saw this, I would not take them seriously in the least, and I’m sure that plenty of viewers either changed the channel or didn’t care enough about them afterward. Now, has it been MTV, I’d be impressed, but not even TIME magazine has bothered with DBSK.

  12. Big A says:

Aw man, why cant we get Fuse here in the Bay Area? Im tired of MTV and VH1 NEVER playing any music videos, and when they do, its only the top 10 or 15 or so. Theyve come to suck massive balls with all their Real World Gauntlet crap. Altho sometimes I watch weird episodes of Made.

    This was good coverage.

  13. j2dolphin says:

hey…y juz sm entertainment’s artist? where is big bang and wonder girls…? y must shinee and snsd?

  14. Michelle says:

Dez, I think you are missing my point. Yes, Fuze is the alternative to MTV and VH1, but how can you say that Fuse does not hit DBSK’s target audience? They obviously got all of us to watch. Even if we are not tweens or teenagers, we still tuned in either on tv or online. Plus, we are blogging about it which gives it even more exposure.
Put it this way, the whole point of Fuse programming is to expose things that are not always popular in America. They don’t want to be as popular as MTV or VH1, or they would conform to MTV/VH1 standards. Even though TIME and MTV don’t seem to care about DBSK, there is no such thing as ‘bad’ publicity, and I am proud that by showing this program Fuse explored what MTV and VH1 don’t seem to care about.

“Really, even if they did get exposed, they’ll be seen as an Asian imitation, rather than real artists.” – Wow, that sounds so bitter and biased. I hadn’t heard about DBSK until this program and I did not think they were asian imitations. I saw a lineup of Korean artists whose fans are insanely loyal. It was a good 30 minute segment, lets leave it a that.

  15. CC says:

lmao that guy is hilarious! If you’ve seen the entire episode, when he is singing “Mirotic” karaoke I don’t think he even knows what he is saying. rofl

  16. Kira says:

Why do they all have the same haircuts?
It makes them all look the same. They all look like a copy of each other.

  17. ella says:

^i think their haircuts has something to do w/fact they’re all students.
anyway.. haha LMAO ‘sexy chin’ and ‘scrambled legs’ puahaha

  18. lol us girls and our boybands!

  19. yumi-chan says:

    The host was hella cool.
Shoot I’d be a fan if he was an idol. 🙂

  20. mandy says:

  22. CeceliaS says:

LOL WTH the crazy fans!!~ BUT LMAO!!! ❤ SHINee

  23. Tibit22 says:

Loved it Fuse it part of most cable packages in America. Along with Directv and other offerings.

This is good exposure I don’t think SM paid them off there is something known as editing. This is a story to cover with limited time to get to the point. It’s K-Pop the producers decided to cut and include the bands with the best responses from the crowds.

Nate was very funny and upbeat not sure why the guys in DBSK beside Yunho looked so upset. I know Mickey has had horrible experiences in America. Of course there are ignorant people everywhere, in each color, gender and size. Not all Americans are hostile to differences..talent will always rise to the top.

So they are compared to Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, NSYN were compared to New Edition and so on and so on. Until you establish yourself and identity as a group with the fans it will be like this for anyone not just an Asian group. Whether you are Mexican, Columbia, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese or Korean to reach the masses in America and get exposure so that they can see your personalities speaking fluent english is a must. Once you have that with talent, originality and star quality and backing you can make it big.

  24. Tibit22 says:

Wanted to add, when Boa comes out with her CD. I hope the Korean American fans will fully support her in a large way. Just like they supported Rain when he had his concert in NY in 2006.

What I could not believe is that DBSK/TVXQ has only sold over 1,000,000 CD when there fans club is massive. In America that is unheard of for a group that Worldwide. I would say an average group sells that there first debut or year if they are a little talented. So to record executives they don’t count that as support NSYC who is as big as DBSK has sold 56 million CD’s and they are no longer together.

That is why Yunho mentioned when they got the award at the Golden Disk that they need more people to buy the CD’s that a lot of time and effort when into it by many people. If they don’t get the support from the fans financially they have to travel to Japan and elsewhere.

Most record companies are just interested in how many CD’s you have sold and will your fans go out and buy in massive quanities your CD. Believe me it’s all business. If DBSK spoke english and sold 50million CD’s they would be on every talk show in America.
